Audacity : A Free Audio Editor for Amateurs & Professionals

Rohit Malik - October 16, 2006

Audacity is a free audio editor which offers multi-tracking recording, mixing and applying of effects. It’s interface is very intuitive to use. It supports import/export of file formats like Aiff, Ogg Vorbis, wav, Mp3, Midi and other sound formats but it doesn’t support WMA format and uses the third party Lame encoder for MP3 conversion because of copyright issues.

Audacity

You can cut, copy and paste inside tracks (with unlimited Undo), mix tracks together, or apply effects to your tracks. The Build-in effects are Fade In/Out, FFT filter, Wahwah, Amplify, Bass Boost, Reverse, Phaser, Echo, Noise Removal and others. It also supports plug-ins in VST format. There are no limits on the number of tracks or the length of any track and it is only limited to your Hard Disk size. It also has built-in amplitude-envelope editor, a customizable spectrogram mode, and a frequency-analysis window for audio-analysis applications. It can’t replace Audio Editors like Adobe, Audition, Reason, Cubase etc. but it’s a powerful free application and you can fulfill most of your audio editing needs.

I’m looking for a frequency analyser plug in for audacity, I want to sample some musical notes and log the frequency to within 10hz say.

The audacity 1.2.3 I bought hasvnothing in the analyser tab and I guess I need a plug in. I’m running windows xp.

Can you please point me in the right direction?

    Thanks

Audacity is horrible! I had a very difficult time PRECISELY editing anything. Blaze has a much easier and user friendly program. You have to pay for it but trust me, it’s worth it. I give Audacity two thumbs down!
