Encyclopedia Britannica

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

Whether you are a student or you have a son or daughter that is a student, you know that resources are invaluable when it comes to writing reports and preparing for tests. Encyclopedia Britannica knows this as well, and they have created some of the best reference materials available for the computer that are now on the market.

If you need help with your English course, Encyclopedia Britannica has reference software for Shakespear as well as software that includes a computerized version of the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. If you need help with your history course, Encyclopedia Britannica gives you the chance to purchase their software references on US Presidents, Black History, Hispanic Heritage and World War 2. There are also such titles as “Birds of the World” and “National Parks” for you to reference.

These are some of the best reference materials out there, and they include more than just page after page of information. They also give you the opportunity to access a list of the most important events pertaining to that subject, video and audio clips, as well as many pictures, photos, and historical essays on the topic. The best part is that you don’t have to spend a ton of time searching for relevant information because you can now do a simple keyword search and the computer will automatically tell you where to find the information that you are looking for. This is great for last minute essay writing and test crunching.

LinkStash – Cross-Browser Bookmark management

Friday, February 15th, 2008

Linkstash is a program for managing your bookmarks. It has surprisingly cool and useful features, considering most “bookmark manager” things don’t really do anything too amazing or especially useful. It manages all your bookmarks and works with all the main browsers, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Netscape and Opera, very useful if you like to use more than one browser. It also opens and closes with the browser.

It has lots of features including :

  • Dead links checker and updater,
  • Favorites sync,
  • Color highlighting of folders/links,
  • Fields for comments, ratings, etc.,
  • Secure encrypted password safe with automated password control for auto website log-on.

Its even available in a portable version!

I was very impressed with this program, definitely the best bookmark manager I’ve come across yet. Multiple backups, option to encrypt the whole bookmark file, even configure certain sites to open in certain browsers. Lots more features than I can go into detail with here.

Like the sound of it? More information at the homepage here

Feed Submitter 2.0

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

Feed Submitter is a semi-automated blog promotion tool that helps increase traffic and RSS feed subscribers. The feed subscriber quickly submits your feed to 200 of the top blog and RSS feed directories.

Pros: The Feed Subscriber is a semi automated submission tool for blog and RSS feed directories. The application knows about 200 odd such directories and can submit to them automatically. The user need not hunt for such directories and submit manually one by one. It’s possible to submit multiple feeds at a time.

Many blog readers follow these directories to find what’s new in a specific keyword category. Besides the first visit, a majority of these readers subscribe to update feeds to follow a blog if they like it. That simply means repeat visitors or traffic. It is this traffic that is the basis of many a follow up activities. Without traffic none of those actions make sense. So, to increase the probabilities of more and more people visiting you virtual enterprise, you’ll need to get your content known widely. So submission to more directories that guide readers to blogs in specific niches is the starting point for many a venture.

To avoid the tedium of manually submitting details individually, the feed submitter does it automatically, with the option to do it manually still, if you prefer that. Any number of RSS feed submissions can be done with the application filling in the submission details automatically. The submitter has a up to date list of directories that number more than 200. Podcast or Videocast submissions also can be made optionally. The user interface is easy to use and easy to understand. No significant learning time is required.

Cons: Final effectiveness of any such tool is if traffic can be built up effectively. It’d depend on the popularity of the directories too. That will depend on other factors however, including quality of your blog of course. What can be assessed is whether submissions get done alright.

Overall a definite 4 star application.

As soon as I saw this program, I knew that I was definitely going to download it and take it for a spin!

Why is that, you ask?  Well, it’s because now that I am starting to earn more and have more credit and bills to take care of, having a personal piece of software that really helps me keep track of it all is exactly what I need. And that is exactly what Buddi will do for you. Buddi is a free piece of software (open source, to be exact) that will allow you to keep track of all of your personal finances and allow you to set up different accounts and categories while at the same time recording transactions that they happen to do. If you want a program to keep you honest about spending, then Buddi is exactly the program to do that for you.

Oh, and the absolute best thing about Buddi is that it happens to be a program created for people with no financial background and little experience in keeping track of their finances. It is the perfect program for the average Joe that just wants a little help with their financial existence.

Threatfire – Zero-day malware protection

Monday, January 21st, 2008

Threatfire is a behavior based malware detector. It guards against malware such as trojans, spyware, rootkits, keyloggers, and buffer overflows, based on behavior patterns consistent with these threats. This means that it doesn’t just rely on a signature database to compare the files on your computer against, although it has one too.

This is always a limitation in signature based scanners (most virus and malware scanners) as they can only find known threats and can be useless against unknown or new threats (so-called ” zero-day” threats). Instead, Threatfire analyzes the activity of everything on your system for any suspicious behavior, which it then warns you about for you to take further action on.

According to test results published at the Threatfire website, it can increase the safety of your computer a great deal compared to just using an antivirus program.

It doesn’t seem to use up much resources and is very easy to use, as no complicated configuration is required. It’s available in a free and a pro version, the only difference being that the on-demand scanner in the free version is partially disabled,so it’ll scan for rootkits only.

The realtime protection is fully functional though, meaning you’re still fully protected against all known threats in the database as well as unknown threats that it may detect.

This is a neat program and good as an extra layer of protection and peace of mind. Click here for more details and download

Glary Utilities – All in one Utilities suite

Friday, January 18th, 2008

Wouldn’t it be good if you could have one program that would do several useful things for your computer? Things such as optimizing it, cleaning it, and improving speed, reliability, privacy and security?

If this sounds good to you, then you might wanna take Glary Utilities for a test drive. While the name may not sound too exciting, it seems to be a very good, well programmed, well thought out, and most importantly of all, useful piece of software.

Its an all in one utilities suite that has some very useful things that most computer users are sure to find useful at some stage. This includes a disk cleaner for scanning for and removing junk temp files from your computer to free up valuable space. It also has a registry cleaner which so far seems pretty good compared to most ones i’ve tried out, just be careful and try not to delete anything you’re not absolutely sure about. If in doubt, you can make a backup first. Other features enable you to delete empty folders and dead shortcuts. (more…)
