Good Vs Evil: orange ball of clay saves the day

Mark Rollins - October 16, 2006

GvsE 3 is a game from Jonathan Smelby, who is the apparent founder of Jonny Comics, Inc. who I assume has made GvsE 1 and 2. The title actually stands for Good Versus Evil, which makes it sound like a great, fantastic epic on the level of Star Wars

Well, it’s not. However, it is an excellent parody and full of fun. You can tell from the intro: “It seems like only yesterday. In fact, it was yesterday.” You play Buddy McCraken, a little orange ball of clay who has hands and feet, yet no arms or legs. From the information that I learned in the cutscenes, Buddy works for Mission Control, and has to stop the evil Dr. Ampere in his fortified fortress. Dr. Ampere has this gigantic ray that he will use to destroy the moon in about six hours or so. It’s kind of like the reverse of Dr. Evil’s plot in Austin Powers 2. Why he wants to destroy the moon is beyond me.

The gameplay feels something like Super Mario. You can even jump and throw little balls that beat your enemies. Unlike Mario, the balls don’t knock the baddies down in one hit, and it often takes several before they go down. Apparently, you only have a certain number of these balls, but you can get more by stepping on these bubbles. Or at least I think this is what’s going on. Anyway, you can also pick up razor blades and lightning bolts that do a little more damage to your enemies.

The interesting thing about this game is after a level is completed, you have the option of buying razors, lightings, and even extra lives. You also get a code that you can use later, in case you need to leave the game at that point. By the way, I can’t figure out how to leave the game, except lose all your lives.

The controls are tough to learn, so I’ll give you the heads up. It has the standard arrow key controls, and Ctrl makes you shoot the balls, blades, bolts, whatever. Shift makes you jump, and it’s also the “Enter” key on the menu screens. It took me a while to figure that one out.

If this sounds good to you, you can download it here.
