Retrograms – yesterdays emails tomorrow

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

567857567456345.jpgEver get the urge to go back in time, a simpler when everything, including interpersonal communication was more elegant, had a little more style? Why not? They haven’t stopped doing telegrams yet, but it’s only a matter of time. There’s something about a telegram, a certain old world class, which emails still can’t equal with all their sassy speed and efficiency.

Retrograms aims to stop all that. Choose from a range of excellent retro looking telegrams and have them shipped to your friends either as e-cards over the Internet, or as real live telegrams delivered through the mail. Okay, so they don’t travel as fast as real telegrams but boy oh boy do they ever look the part.

For all the retro telegram sending fun you can handle, go to Retro Gram.

Recolored: Black and white photos into color!

Monday, November 27th, 2006

0976545909876560.jpgGot some old black and white photographs you wouldn’t mind seeing in color?
Before computers helped, it had to be done by hand, requiring great skill and patience to achieve good results.

Nowadays, it’s possible to do it yourself on your computer, not easy, but possible!

Well general purpose graphics programs are usually awkward and time consuming to use if trying to recolor an old black and white photo. Recolored is software for colorizing black and white photos.

There is a learning curve and its a little too technical to describe in a simple blog review but it doesn’t take more than a few minutes to start getting results. Overall, I say Recolored is worth the download for anyone who’s got a lot of old photos and wonder what it really looked like to be there!

You can check out more detailed info and download the demo right here.

BoXiKoN – tetris redefined

Friday, November 24th, 2006

76545678900987.jpgHaving always been a fan of one of the most ageless games in the world, TETRIS; I was itching to see if anyone could come up with a Tetris – styled game that would be totally different. BoXiKon did that for me.

BoXiKoN is a logic based puzzle game of strategy and forward thinking. The game obviously belongs to the Tetris family of shape games, but it really is quite different. There is a large emphasis on planning, organization and selection and less on arcade style quick reactions.

There is also a version for available for Mac users.

Friday, November 24th, 2006

876546456.jpgBackgammon is a great game that has been around for a very long time, long before computers were even dreamed about. But you can now enjoy this game in a new way on your PC. Enter Backgammon 3D!

Backgammon 3D (or 3D Backgammon as it’s commonly known) is a 3D visualization of a classical board game – Backgammon. Now you can play with your computer not only on a flat screen, but also enjoy 3D operations – rotating the board, looking at the board from the side of your opponent, and other cool features.

One useful thing about the board rotation feature is that it helps you to see the game from different perspectives and this makes the game more interesting; you’ll definitely enjoy the game better this way.

Pandora: Internet Radio to suit your tastes!

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

Pandora is an internet radio station site, but with a twist! It knows what you might like, before you’ve even heard it! You simply type in the name of a song or artist, and it generates a playlist of similiar sounding songs and artists! It bases its findings on musical similiarity, not popularity, only the music counts!

It’s part of the ‘Music Genome Project’ an attempt to group thousands of songs by musical similarity. Everything from melody, harmony and rhythm, to instrumentation, orchestration, arrangement, lyrics, and of course the rich world of singing and vocal harmony. It’s not about what a band looks like, or what genre they supposedly belong to, or about who buys their records – it’s about what each individual song sounds like. You can even give a “Thumbs Up”, which makes that song and songs that sound like that song play more often or “Thumbs Down” bans that song from that station, and makes songs that sound like that song play less often.

It’s a great way to discover new music based on what you already know you like. I like how they even provide links to more info on each band or artist, so if you find something you like you can easily learn more info!

Capitol W spells Failure

Monday, November 20th, 2006

dubya1.pngIt’s easy to see what side of the bread the code monkeys at Google have buttered, politically speaking. Type “failure” into Google and click “I’m feeling lucky.” Well yeah that just about says it.

I’m really curious as to how this was done. Usually search engine stuff is all drawn from the target page, spiderbots read all the text on the page (and more importantly IN the page) and catalogue this in the database. I’ve viewed the source of that page on the Whitehouse site and there’s nothing like that in the code. Obviously, putting comments like that in the Whitehouse code is a short way to get yourself fired…

So the only explanation is that someone put it directly into the Google database. Man, the power. It’s overwhelming, isn’t it?

Funphotor – Fun Redefined!

Monday, November 20th, 2006

Have you ever had crazy and wild thoughts like trading places with Benjamin Franklin on the 100-dollar bill? Making your dog the president? Your baby an astronaut? Etc. Well this might just be your opportunity to make your wild dreams come true. Funphotor is just what you need.

ZeallSoft FunPhotor is fun and easy to use photo blending software, a fun-filled Windows application that lets you blend your family portraits with well-known artwork to create comical images. With a few short steps, you can add your face to the carved granite US Presidents on Mount Rushmore, put your portrait on a $100 bill, or create all sorts of gag gifts for your friends.

Call me unserious but the fact that it is great for practical jokes is why I really love this software. You can make crazily funny greeting cards with it and have a whole lot of fun having laughs on people. It’s really a fun-software.

3D Driving-School: Learn to drive at your computer…well, almost!

Friday, November 17th, 2006

b26_2.jpgThis is a really cool program i found that gives you virtual driving lessons, complete with virtual driving instructor! It’s based on driving in Europe, so left side of car and driving on the right! At least that was the case in the version I tried although i think they have other versions, but the site is a little confusingly laid out. Don’t let that put you off though. This is a very good program and you almost feel like you’re really driving,as you have to pay attention or you’ll break the rules of the road or even cause an accident!

In the version i played around with, you can choose from 4 driving instructors,
three car cockpits, three motorbike cockpits (Hornet, Scooter and a cool Chopper). It starts at beginner level with basics such as indicating and stopping at traffic lights, giving right of way, etc, all the way up to…well almost real life conditions!

I had the pleasure (and pain) of going on a road trip across Europe not so long ago, so i can say that the scenery and experience is pretty accurate in some ways! I’d recommend this for anyone learning to drive or planning on driving in Europe. It’ll give you a good chance to become familiar with the various rules of the road! All from the safety of your chair! (Seatbelt not included)
