Protopage: One place for everything you need

Thursday, December 14th, 2006

Protopage is just one of the online applications developed using Ajax.
Ajax and Web 2.0 are the new buzz words in the Internet world these days.

Ajax, shorthand for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML, is a web development technique for creating interactive web applications… This is meant to increase the webpages interactivity, speed, and usability. There are some really practical projects going on using Ajax techniques to create online applications and this is just one.

123456765432123456787654.jpg

What that translates to, is the existance of more and more web-based interactive tools, some of which are reviewed in this blog. But back to what protopage is all about. It allows you to create your own custom dynamic webpage full of fresh content, your own pictures, notes, links, RSS newsfeeds, etc. All of which can be moved around on the page and resized as you see fit. It’s fun and extremely easy. What makes it even better is that you can access this page (pages actually) from any computer and everything is exactly how you left it. You can even create public pages with stuff you want other’s to see while protecting pages that you don’t want people to see.

It’s very time saving to have all your bookmarks, newsfeeds, weather, notes, widgets etc easily available on one highly customizable and easy to use page or pages. That’s one of the best things i like about it when compared to other similar services, you never run out of space because you can use more than one page.

You can check it out here to get your own free page!

Google Packs a Punch

Monday, December 11th, 2006

sidebar.jpgGoogle Pack is a suite of software, some original software and some bundled third party software, all of it designed to enhance your productivity. Google Desktop is billed as a desktop companion, but basically what it is a search facility for all your “stuff”, emails, files on your computer, your web history etc. Oh and by far the best gadget, if you’ll pardon the pun, you also get the facility to add Google Gadgets to customize your desktop and the Google Sidebar. Gadgets are a bit like Widgets on the Mac, and are little programs which do one job that are easy to access from the desktop.

Also as part of the package you get Picasa, Google’s Photo organiser and editor, Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer (for those of us who don’t have Firefox), plus you get the Google pack photo screensaver. For your fix of Google Gadgets, go here for all the details.

You can make 3D objects, texture them, light them on a virtual sound stage, and render them in 3D to a very high level of realism, allwithin this one program.

Okay so if you want to use it after 30 days you have to pay for it, but to get to learn how to use it for free? You got to love that price.

Go to the trial web site for details. Works for PC and Mac.

SpywareGuard: No access for spyware!

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

sgscreenshot.gifSpywareGuard works similar to the realtime protection feature on many anti-virus programs, except it guards against spyware. It works in the background, scanning any EXE and CAB files on access ( these are file types that spyware often come as) and alerting you if known spyware is detected.

If this is the case, it initially blocks access to the file and then allows the user to select an action. It provides a fast scanning engine, signature-based scanning, heuristic/generic scanning, a control panel, and an online update utility for downloading of up-to-date definition updates. It also detects with signature-based scanning for known spyware and heuristic/generic detection capabilities to catch new or mutated spyware.

This is brought to us by JavaCool Software, the same people who make SpywareBlaster, which i reviewed previously here.

Both programs work fine running together and offer decent protection for spyware/adware prevention and detection.

It’s essential these days to have some kind of anti-spyware defense, and this program is a good defensive measure to have guarding your computer.

You can check out more information and get this totally free program here.

No time like Quicktime

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

Quicktime is of course a core technology on Apple Mac computers, but is an add-on to Windows too. Quicktime player, has many similarities with Windows Media Player and plays a lot of the same media. So why would you bother with Quicktime? My not stick with the native player on Windows.

Well, as a predominantly Mac based writer, I will admit to a little bias, but honestly it doesn’t really matter what you use, WMP, Quicktime, DiVX Player, whatever floats your media. But I have to say that I like the quality and solidity of Quicktime. Okay it doesn’t play Windows files quite so well as WMP, but it does play them. It does however ROCK as the kids would say with QT files. There is actually no reason why you shouldn’t have many different video file players on your machine, Windows or Mac. Most of the cohabit very gracefully on any machine, and I have most of them on my Macs and PCs.

Most importantly, whatever media player you use, make sure you always have the latest versions, and that goes double for Quicktime. Check it out at the source.

It’s very simple to use, you simply open up an image file inside it, it can be BMP, JPEG, or GIF filetype, the resulting animation is shown straight away. Then you can choose from several settings such as amplitude, frequency, resize, light source, transparency, angle, the length and speed of animation.

This could be very useful for clubs or sports teams etc, or just anyone who’d like to have a cool animated flag on their website.

PostSmile – put a smile on your post

Thursday, December 7th, 2006

1073721699-1.gifWith PostSmile sending emails and posting on message boards gets to be fun. You can Drag and Drop images and animations, smiles and emoticons, text or HTML snippets, quotes and signatures into your email, message board or web-forum postings.

One thing I appreciate about this program is that the smiley faces are divided into clear categories – Happy, Love, Sad, Communication, Other, Signatures, Famous Quotes, Love Quotes, Proverbs, Jokes and Compliments. PostSmile offers a wide variety of smiley faces but that’s not all, hundreds and hundreds of great emoticons are available in the PostSmile’s Online Collections Gallery. It also works well with all major email programs.

Like me you may be having an issue with the price. You may find it difficult to comprehend why you should part with $24.95 for smiley faces. Well they are offering a 25% Christmas discount presently, so it only goes for $18.71 for now. If you are still having an issue with the price, check out the trial version. But you need to note that you’ll only get limited smileys with the trial version , to get access to hundreds of emoticons , you’ll have to buy the full version.

Deskloops: Loop your desktop!

Wednesday, December 6th, 2006

2678908765432345690.jpgDeskloops is a program to help you navigate through your open windows easier. It creates a loop of all your windows which you can scroll through by going left or right. Alternatively you can go to the top of the screen and scroll through thumbnails of your windows.

Its much easier to watch it in action than it is to describe it, so check out the first video here entitled “Getting started” and you’ll understand clearer!

It’s a pretty well made program and the navigation system is pretty simple and uncluttered and gets the job done. Although i think nowadays many people will just stick to tabs. But for anyone who doesn’t use tabs, its worth checking out. Also the optional 3D effect feature looks pretty cool, but may get in the way after a while.

I’d recommend checking this out to anyone who finds themselves with a lot of windows open frequently and who doesn’t already use tabs!

You can download it here and read more info and watch some video demos/tutorials. Oh and its free!

Feed me, Seymour

Monday, December 4th, 2006

feedvalid.pngFeed validation doesn’t sound very sexy, does it? I bet you keep yourself awake at night, don’t you, worrying if your RSS feed is perfectly formed? No okay you probably don’t, but if you are podcaster or a blogger then you will at least be interested to know there IS an online resource which can totally debug your RSS feed code.

Just type the address for your feed into the Feed Validator and it will go off, load your XML file and debug it for any obvious code bloopers. Usually if it gets through Feed Validator it will pass muster with browsers, feed collectors, iTunes, you name it. Also a good thing to check if your code is not working for some reason. FV will usually get to the bottom of the problem.
