Plasma Pong – It’s pong, with plasma!

Friday, February 9th, 2007

plasma3_small1.JPGAt first glance, you would assume this was just a flashy pong clone, but you’d be very wrong. In fact, the ball rarely even touches a paddle in this game. Instead, you propel it back and forth by using skillful bursts of colorful energy. It’s a fast-paced very colorful game that’s a blast to play once you get the hang of it.

You can control the flow of the plasma, with the left mouse button and you can gather the power with the right mouse button and release it at a critical moment. You really should experience and see it with your own eyes to fully appreciate the game. Anyway, it’s completely free, and includes an option to play with your friends.

NOTE: You may need a Pentium 4 with an average graphics card to appreciate its quality. You can download it free from here.

Open the Mystery Case Files

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

mysterycasefilesra_feature.jpgThe latest in the Mystery Case Files series, Mystery Case Files: Ravenhearst. This popular graphic adventure puzzle game series adds a new adventure, and like the others it’s a free download for the 75Mb demo files, but you have to pay for the rest of the game. Very shrewd strategy, because once you play the demo through you really start to want the rest.

You see there are rumors surrounding the history of stately Ravenhearst Manor. The diary of Emma Ravenhearst holds the key to the story behind the manor, but conveniently some pages are missing… Gasp. But you are the Master Detective and it is up to you to unlock secrets of Ravenhearst, searching over 30 rooms for graphical clues.

Galaxy Guard – a nice and simple game

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

6786585464575484567.jpgI think you should check this game out. It’s called Galaxy Guard.

Galaxy Guard is nice and simple game with cool graphics. In the game you are expected to destroy as many enemies as you can and stay alive to reach the enemy’s base. But that’s not all you’ll encounter big motherships that are your primary targets, you’ll also get the chance to equip your ship with new weapons, armor and energy by destroying the right enemy ships.

It’s a nice and simple game that should work easily with most Windows OS, though I’ll advise you use any OS higher than Windows 98 for optimum performance.

UnFREEz: Animated GIF’s the easy way.

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

unfreez.jpgUnFREEz is a very small program that will take any number of images, saved as separate GIF files, and create a single animated GIF from those images. Just drag and drop some GIF files into it, set the frame delay time and have UnFREEz create the animated GIF.This is cool if you want to make your own avatars for forums, instant messenger, etc. This is the easiest way to do it without having to go learn complicted methods in image manipulation software such as Photoshop etc.

Additional features include automatic interlacing and transparency detection.

Its freeware and you can get it over here.

Hoppy Hippo Halma

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

Hippo HalmaHalma is a game played on a solitaire type board with 10 pins by 2-3 players. These players can be either computer or human, and you can save games to pick up later if you wish. It’s identical to the board game Halma.

The game (named from the Greek word meaning “jump”) is a board game invented in the 1800s by a surgeon at Harvard Medical School, a guy called George Howard Monks. There was apparently an English game called Hoppity before this but Halma was different. You use a checkered board, divided into 16×16 squares, and playing pieces are of course black & white for two-player games, and of various colors in games of four players or more.

Curiously addictive. Oh and there’s no Hippos in the game. In fact it’s just the name of the software company. Also no hippos were harmed in the making of this game. 🙂

Songbird: Media player with a difference

Monday, January 29th, 2007

4567890-09876567890-90.jpgSongbird is a media player, but not all media players are quoted as promising “to be the Firefox of media players”.

Apparently the user interface is very similar to iTunes, but the main thing I noticed about this media player is its ability to list all the sound or video files on a page, almost as if they were local files.

You see how this thing operates, is you surf to sites such as mp3 blogs etc, by using the built-in browser, and all the media on the page will be listed. You can then choose if you would like to save or play any of these songs/videos locally to your collection. Of course you can also play and organize playlists etc, with your current mp3 or video collection that resides on your computer.

It is pretty cool to be able to instantly play media without having to open it in a separate program.

This might be useful software for anyone who routinely browses for music or videos online. You can find out more details and download it by clicking here!
